Poodll Solo

Real speaking practice, graded automatically.

Poodll Solo is an automatically graded open speaking (or writing) assignment for Moodle. Students record themselves speaking about a topic (or type a response), and Solo evaluates the submission automatically using speech recognition and AI, giving grammar corrections and other feedback.

It's used for oral exam preparation, speaking practice with automated feedback, low/medium-stakes speaking assessments (e.g. placement tests), and short essay writing tasks with instant feedback and corrections.

The Speaking Topic

The teacher prepares a speaking topic in the activity settings — something to talk about, a target speaking time, a target word count, and optional target words the student is encouraged to use (which earn bonus points). The topic can include additional resources such as images, video and model audio.

The Activity Steps

A Solo attempt follows a sequence of steps, chosen per activity:

• Prepare → Record → Model (default) — read the topic, record a spoken response, then optionally review a model answer.
• Prepare → Type → Record → Model — type out a response first, then record it being spoken aloud, so students can practice reading a prepared script.
• Prepare → Type → Model — a writing-only variant: the student types their response instead of recording.
• Record → Model — skips preparation, straight to recording.

Every sequence finishes with the student reviewing their results (and a model answer, if set). Recording accepts audio or video.

Auto grading

Poodll Solo builds a grade from a configurable formula: word count against your target, an overall AI-assessed quality score, how relevant the response is to the topic, plus bonus points for using target words. Alongside the grade, students get suggested grammar corrections and other AI feedback on their submission. Teachers can review and adjust any grade.

Getting Started with Poodll Solo

Poodll Solo requires a Poodll API username and secret. These are available with a free trial or a paid subscription. To get your API username and secret:

1. Visit: https://poodll.com/try-poodll
2. Follow the steps to take a free trial
3. Register your Moodle site URL and collect your API user and secret

Then install Poodll Solo. You can enter your API user and secret on the plugin settings page. Please see the Poodll Solo support documentation for more information on installing and using Poodll Solo.
