BigBlueButtonBN Activity Module for Moodle

BigBlueButton is an open source web conferencing system that enables universities and colleges to deliver a high-quality learning experience to remote students.

These instructions describe how to install the BigBlueButtonBN Activity Module for Moodle. This module is developed and supported by Blindside Networks, the company that started the BigBlueButton project in 2007.

With the latest version of this plugin you can

• Create links in any course that can be used to create rooms/sessions in a BigBlueButton server


• Specify join open/close dates that will appear in the Moodle calendar


• Create a custom welcome messages that appears in the chat window when users join the session


• Launch BigBlueButton in its own tab or window


• Assign the role uses will have in BigBlueButton (moderator, viewer) per user or role in Moodle


• Pre-upload presentations


• Monitor the active sessions for the course and end any session (eject all users)


• Record and playback your lectures


• Access and manage recorded lectures


• Import recording links from a different course, and more.

Note that on previous versions of Moodle you will need to use the specific version of this plugin.

These instructions describe how to install the BigBlueButtonBN Activity Module for Moodle. This module is developed and supported by Blindside Networks, the company that started the BigBlueButton project in 2007.

With the latest version of this plugin you can
- Create links in any course that can be used to create sessions in a BigBlueButton server
- Specify join open/close dates that will appear in the Moodle calendar
- Create a custom welcome messages that appears in the chat window when users join the session
- Launch BigBlueButton in its own tab or window
- Assign the role uses will have in BigBlueButton (moderator, viewer) per user or role in Moodle
- Preupload presentations
- Monitor the active sessions for the course and end any session (eject all users)
- Record and playback your lectures
- Access and manage recorded lectures, and more.

Note that on previous versions of Moodle you will need to use the specific version of this plugin.

- For Moodle 1.9 use version 1.0.9 (2013071000).

- For Moodle 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 use version 1.1.1 (2015062101)

- For Moodle 2.6+ use version 2.0.0 (20150806xx).

Prerequisites

You need:

1.  A server running Moodle 2.6+

2.  A BigBlueButton 0.8 (or later) server running on a separate server (not on the same server as your Moodle site)

Blindside Networks provides you a test BigBlueButton server for testing this plugin. To use this test server, just accept the default settings when configuring the activity module. The default settings are

Obtaining the source

This GitHub repostiory at

contains the latest source. We recomend to download the latest snapshot from the Moodle Plugin Database.

Installation

These instructions assume your Moodle server is installed at /var/www/moodle.

1. 
   

   Copy bigbluebuttonbn.zip to /var/www/moodle/mod

   
   


2. 
   

   Enter the following commands

   
   

   cd /var/www/moodle/mod
   sudo unzip bigbluebuttonbn.zip

   
   

   This will create the directory

   
   

   ./bigbluebuttonbn
   
   

   
   


3. 
   

   Login to your moodle site as administrator

   
   

   Moodle will detect the new module and prompt you to Upgrade.

   
   


4. 
   

   Click the 'Upgrade' button.

   
   

   The activity module will install mod_bigbluebuttonbn.

   
   


5. 
   

   Click the 'Continue' button.

   
   

   You'll be prompted to configure the activity module.

   
   


6. 
   

   Enter the URL and salt (security key) to your BigBlueButton server (or use the default values for testing).

   
   


7. 
   

   Click the 'Save Changes' button.

   
   

At this point, you can enter any course, turn editing on, and add a BigBlueButtonBN activity link to the class.

Note: You will want to install the RecordingsBN activity module to access recordings as well.

These instructions describe how to install the BigBlueButtonBN Activity Module for Moodle 2.x. This module is developed and supported by Blindside Networks, the company that started the BigBlueButton project in 2007.

With this plugin you can

• Restrict students from entering the virtual classroom until a teacher joins


• Monitor the active classes and end any class (eject all users)

Prerequisites

You need:

1. A server running Moodle 1.9. Be advised that this version was originally developed for the latest release 1.9.19 (2007101592.00) and even though it has been tested on the two previous releases 1.9.17 and 1.9.18 some features might not work.


2. A BigBlueButton 0.8 (or later) server running on a separate server (not on the same server as your Moodle site)

Blindside Networks provides you a test BigBlueButton server for testing the Moodle integration. To use this test server, just accept the default settings when configuring the activity module. The default settings are

   You'll see the database tables setup.

   You'll be prompted to configure the activity module.

   Enter the URL and salt (security key) to your BigBlueButton server (or use the default values for test-install).

   Click the Save Changes button.

   
   

At this point, you can enter any course, turn editing on, and add a BigBlueButton activity link to the class.

When adding a link, you can specify:

• The name of the virtual classroom


• Whether students must wait until a teacher joins the virtual classroom before they can join

When a user clicks on the link, the activity module will use the BigBlueButton API to create a virtual classroom and join the user into that classroom. Students join a viewers, other Moodle users (such as administrators and teachers) join as moderators.
