we are sorry to hear about your problems with our plugin. If you have any issues, I would recommend to contact us via github and report the bugs, as you did just a couple of hours ago . We are eager to hear about your use cases and especially the bugs you’ve encountered while using our Checkmark Module. Especially because we (5 universities in Austria) are using this plugin since a couple of years; the Vienna University of Technology even since 2007.
If your version of the Checkmark Module is buggy, I would recommend updating to the newest version on a test-system and if the bugs still occur to contact us so that we can fix the bugs as soon as possible. We always try to fix bugs as quickly as possible, and we also try to keep the communication via github up-to-date. Even the bug that you reported in 2015 was a high priority issue for us, but neither you nor we could reproduce it. Bugs that we can’t reproduce are super hard to fix, so it is always useful if at least the reporter can reproduce them.

I would not recommend using this plugin, as it is very buggy, and caused us trouble multiple times ever since we installed it in late 2015.

We just published a bug fix version 3.3.2 of the Checkmark plugin for Moodle 3.3 fixing a regression causing erronous field cleaning in checkmark settings.

that's wonderfull to hear! And concerning using Moodle 3.0: don't forget about Moodle 3.0's support ending (bug-related support ended in November 2016, and security fixes ended today - 2017-05-08)!

First I'd like to ask you to report possible bugs via our tracker in the github repository (https://github.com/academic-moodle-cooperation/moodle-mod_checkmark/issues).
Have you set the activity's visibility to 'show'? Otherwise the activity won't show up for students. But generally speaking, the visibility in the course is usually controlled by Moodle itself.
Can you give us more information on the issue?

I have installed the plugin on my 3.0 site, created an activity, but I can't see it as a student (there are no restrictions)
What am I missing here?

We just published bug fix releases 3.1.4 and 3.2.1 of the Checkmark module for Moodle 3.1 and 3.2, respectively. See the CHANGELOG.txt file for a description of fixed bugs.
